October 4 - The magazine will host the first of its newly-launched Big 5 Tournaments at the end of this month in Prince William County.
The Big 5 Fall Bash will feature three age divisions - at 17U/18U, 16U and 15U - with each of the five teams in the age divisions playing each other and the top two teams advancing to a championship game. All games in each age division will be held at the same field over the weekend of Oct. 28-29.
The tournament will serve as a precursor to several youth and high school-aged tournaments hosted by the magazine beginning in 2018 and beyond, including a Big 5 Series which will feature tournaments at nine different age levels, beginning at 9U and up to 18U. The Big 5 Series will include five qualifiers, with winners receiving paid bids to a season-ending championship event.
The Big 5’s youth tournaments will be held at fields throughout Northern Virginia, with the high school-aged tournaments held in a championship showcase format and hosted at college and university fields throughout Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
“The motive behind hosting these will be to provide teams with high-quality tournaments in a small format on one field,” magazine editor and publisher Joey Kamide said. “We’re hoping the Big 5 Series will create some buzz, with teams aiming to enter and win qualifiers - much like what Perfect Game does on a much larger, national scale with their Super25.”
Tournament schedules for the spring and summer will be released in the coming months.
