October 6 - Cleveland Indians outfielder Brandon Guyer was not included on the team’s roster for its American League Division Series against the New York Yankees and the Herndon High School graduate is not likely to appear in the postseason while recovering from a wrist injury, according to manager Terry Francona.
Guyer injured his wrist while swinging during a mid-September game and has been on the disabled list since. Francona said earlier this week that he does not expect him to return this year, even if the Indians advance beyond the ALDS. Cleveland beat the Yankees, 4-0, in Game 1 of their best-of-5 series last night and will host Game 2 later today.
Nagging injuries limited Guyer to 70 games this season, and he was unable to find the form that made him one of baseball’s top hitters against left-handed pitchers last year. Guyer hit .236 with a .326 on-base percentage, homering twice and driving in 20 runs in 165 at-bats. He was 6-for-18 during Cleveland’s run to Game 7 of the World Series last fall.
The Indians have Greg Allen, Michael Brantley, Jay Bruce, Lonnie Chisenhall, Austin Jackson and Jason Kipnis as the outfielders on their ALDS roster.
Paul VI Grad Aker Released by Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks released right-hander Mitchell Aker (Paul VI Catholic) last week after the undrafted free agent’s first professional season.
Aker made 15 appearances, including nine starts, with four clubs at three levels this year after spending time in the organization’s extended minor league spring training. Aker went undrafted following his senior season at the College of William & Mary last year, the pitched in the independent United Professional Baseball League before being signed late last fall by Arizona.
Notable Number: .538 - Batting average of Joe Rizzo (Oakton) during the Double-A Modesto Nuts’ run to the California League championship. Rizzo was 7-for-13 in the postseason and was named MVP of the league championship series.
