No. 1 Bulldogs, No. 2 Bruins Claim Class 6 Region Titles; Forge Falls in Walk-Off Fashion

May 31 - Top-ranked Westfield posted its 16th shutout of the season en route to a 2-0 win over No. 8 Centreville and No. 2 Lake Braddock’s five-run third inning proved to be the difference in a 9-5 win at West Springfield as both teams claimed Class 6 region championships earlier today.

In the Region 6C final this afternoon, Andrew Schaeb and Jay Cassady had three hits apiece and combined for three RBI and Cassady went the distance as the Bruins (23-3) knocked off the defending champion Spartans (14-11) for their first region title since 2013. West Springfield had won four of the previous five match-ups between the two rivals, including a 7-2 win in the Patriot District final on May 17.

Alex Reilly took the loss, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on seven hits in four innings.

In tonight’s Region 6D final, Nick Lottchea struck out eight in five innings and Danny Leo earned a two-inning save as the Bulldogs (22-3) shut out their Concorde District rival for the fourth time this spring. Westfield, which has allowed just one run in five postseason games, won its first region championship since 2004. The Wildcats (18-8) were seeking their program’s first title.

Derek Furr drove in the game’s first run with a ground out in the bottom of the first and Kevin Mackmin, who was 2-for-3, had an RBI single in the fifth. Centreville’s Gavin Collins had a game-high two hits, while Hunter Bell took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) over 4.1 innings. He fanned eight.

The Bulldogs will host West Springfield and the Wildcats will travel to Lake Braddock in Tuesday’s state quarterfinals.

The area’s fifth team that has qualified for the Class 6 state tournament, Colonial Forge, lost to James RIver, 5-4, in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth last night in the Region 6B final. Aiden Tierney had two hits and Keegan Doyle drove in two runs for the Eagles (16-8), who will travel to Region A champion Ocean Lakes for their quarterfinal contest.
