Notebook: Search Continues for 8th Coach in 9 Years at Woodbridge’s Freedom

November 28 - A position that took nine months to fill last year remains vacant six months after Rich Davila stepped down in May after one season as the head coach at Freedom High School in Woodbridge.

The position had been advertised on the Prince William County Public Schools website, but was pulled down earlier this month. The school’s director of student activities, Steve Bryson, wrote via email on Monday that, “We are still looking into it,” when asked for an update.

While other male sports programs at the school thrive - the Eagles’ football team will play Westfield on Friday in the Class 6 state semifinals and the boys basketball team is four seasons removed from a state tournament appearance - the baseball program has struggled the stay afloat.

Freedom snapped a 59-game losing streak last April, but finished just 1-18 in Davila’s lone season. In each of the past two years, Bryson hasn’t hired a coach until mid-February. The program’s next coach will be its eighth in nine seasons.
