State Champion Bruins, Indians Top Season’s Final Northern Virginia Top 10 Poll


June 18 - Two area state champions top the final Northern Virginia Top 10 Poll, sponsored by Prime Time Baseball in Alexandria.

No. 1 Lake Braddock (26-3) received 37 of 41 first-place votes and had 406 points while No. 2 Stafford (24-3) got the remaining four first-place votes and 363 points from the magazine’s 41-member selection committee.

On Friday, the Bruins defeated James River, 9-6, in the Class 6 state semifinals before holding off then-No. 1 Westfield, 6-2, to claim the Burke school’s second state title under first-year head coach John Thomas. The Bulldogs (24-4) finished No. 3, receiving 337 points after reaching its first state final since 2004.

The Lake Braddock-Westfield showdown marked the third time in five years that two Northern Virginia teams have met in the Class 6 state final.

The Indians (24-3) capped their memorable season in dramatic fashion, beating Hickory, 11-10, in walk-off fashion in the Class 5 state semifinals and then beating Mills Godwin, 4-3, in the final on Tucker Sullivan’s walk-off single. Coach Tommy Harrison’s club won the first state championship in program history.

No. 4 Riverside (18-8) and No. 5 Brentsville District flipped positions this week after heartbreaking endings to their respective seasons.

The Rams, who received 245 points, advanced to the Class 4 state final but fell to Lafayette, 7-6, on a game-ending error. It was the fourth-year program’s second state final berth in four years. The Tigers (21-4) reached the Class 3 state semifinals for a second straight year but lost to eventual champion Fluvanna County, 5-4, on a walk-off home run. They got 244 points.

The final five spots remained the same. No. 6 Centreville (18-9) received 194 points and was followed by No. 7 Patriot (17-5) with 141 points, No. 8 Battlefield (18-5) with 128 points, No. 9 Briar Woods (20-5) with 87 points and No. 10 Highland School (20-5) with 51 points.

Also receiving votes were the following teams: Potomac (24), Colonial Forge (12), Madison (8), Stone Bridge (7), West Springfield (5), Broad Run (2) and West Potomac (1).
