Top 10: Area's Last 5 Standing Top Rankings Entering VHSL State Semifinals


June 10 - For a fourth straight week, Westfield tops the Northern Virginia Top 10 Poll, sponsored by Prime Time Baseball in Alexandria.

The Bulldogs (23-3) received 40 of 41 first-place votes and 409 points entering their Class 6 state semifinal tomorrow against Ocean Lakes. Westfield led the contest, 7-0, in the bottom of the second inning before it was postponed due to rain on Friday and the game will pick up at that point.

Remaining at No. 2 is Lake Braddock (24-3), which got the remaining first-place vote and 366 total points entering its Class 6 state semifinal tomorrow against James River. No. 3 Stafford (22-3) received 344 points to remain in the same position entering tomorrow’s Class 5 state semifinal against Hickory.

The Class 5 and Class 6 state semifinals and championship games are being held just northwest of Richmond at Glen Allen and Deep Run high schools, respectively.

In Salem tomorrow, No. 4 Brentsville District (21-3) will play Fluvanna County in the Class 3 state semifinals. The Tigers received 259 and moved up one spot this week. No. 5 Riverside (17-7), which got 222 points and jumped one spot, will play in the Class 4 state semifinals against Great Bridge. All of the Class 3 and Class 4 state semifinals are being held at Kiwanis Field in Salem.

Dropping two spots was No. 6 Centreville (18-9), which had its season end with a 5-4 loss to Lake Braddock in the Class 6 state quarterfinals. The Wildcats received 204 points. They were followed by No. 7 Patriot (17-5) and No. 8 Battlefield (18-5), which remained in the same spots this week. The Pioneers received 143 points and the Bobcats got 133 points.

Rising one position was No. 9 Briar Woods (20-5), which received 62 points. And re-entering the rankings was No. 10 Highland School (20-5), which got 30 points. Dropping from the rankings was Stone Bridge (16-10), which was No. 9 last week.

Also receiving votes this week were the following teams: Potomac (27), Stone Bridge (25), Colonial Forge (18), West Springfield (15), Madison (7), Broad Run (3), McLean (3) and West Potomac (1).
