Travel Notebook: Marcucci Wraps Impressive Fall Campaign with Metro Senators


October 30 - Antonio Marcucci continued his big fall by striking out nine in five innings in a combined no-hitter, and we went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI as the Metro Senators 14U South beat NOVA Elite, 22-1, in a Northern Virginia Travel Baseball League contest on Oct. 22.

Kyle Pilc pitched the final inning to complete the no-hitter. Brody Shawn was 3-for-3 with two triples and six RBI to pace the Senators offensively.

A left-handed pitcher who plays first base and in the outfield when not on the mound, Marcucci went 3-1 with a save, a 1.21 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 23 innings while hitting .424 this fall. He was a member of the Fort Hunt Little League team that won the league’s first-ever state championship in the summer of 2017, and is currently an eighth grader at Carl Sandburg Middle School in Alexandria.

The Senators are coached by Mike Gallagher, the head coach at Robinson Secondary School.

For 2nd Straight Year, Rain Causes Havoc for GMBL’s Halloween Tournament

Last year, many of the tournament’s championship games were rained out due to inclement weather on the final day. This year, Mother Nature struct earlier, with heavy rains forcing the cancellation of the final day of pool play and all of elimination play at the Greater Manassas Baseball League’s fifth annual Halloween Havoc.

The tournament had 65 registered teams divided into six age divisions. GMBL organizers sent a message to coaches informing them of the cancellation. “Unfortunately we have to cancel this weekend's event,” tournament organizers posted on GMBL’s website. “We hope that you all will take a look at our 2019 Tournament dates being released in the coming months!!”

Marucci Stars 11U Camp Wins Winter World Series, Run Winning Streak at 52

Ethan Hudson went 11-for-13 with nine RBI and won two games and struck out 13 to just one walk in 7.2 innings as Marucci Stars 11U Camp swept six games to win the Top Gun Winter World Series in North Carolina the weekend of Oct. 20-21.

Hudson’s big weekend helped the Stars (23-0) remain undefeated this fall. They extended their winning streak to 52 games in their first pool play game on Friday at the Halloween Havoc, but the remainder of the tournament was rained out over the weekend.

At the Winter World Series, regarded annually as one of the East Coast’s top youth tournaments, the Stars swept their three games to advance to the Gold Bracket. They then beat West Raleigh 11U Blue, 6-4, in the quarterfinals, Rock Solid Red, 11-1, in the semifinals, and Dirtbags Black, 9-1, in the championship game. All three elimination play teams were from North Carolina.

Bryant James connected on three home runs and had nine RBI, and Caden Merritt went 7-for-16 with a home run while striking out nine over five innings. He earned the win in the semifinals, when he fanned six in four innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run.

The Stars have one tournament remaining, the Ripken Baseball Veteran’s Day Tournament from Nov. 9-11 in Aberdeen, MD.

PBR’s Mid-Atlantic Challenge Postponed to Sunday at Virginia Sports Complex

Weather also forced the postponement of Prep Baseball Report’s invite-only Mid-Atlantic Challenge at Pftizner Stadium, forcing the event to be postponed to Sunday at the Virginia Sports Complex in Ruther Glen.

The showcase event will feature players from Delaware and Maryland facing players from Virginia and Washington, D.C. Teams consisting of freshmen and sophomores will play at 10:15 a.m., followed by a game consisting of juniors at 2:15 p.m. and a game consisting of seniors at 6:15 p.m.

Prior to each game, participating players will be timed in the 60-yard dash, take two rounds of batting practice, and take infield/outfield practice. PBR staff will be videoing the workouts and games and recording metrics for each player.
